Brumbies live within the Tuan and Toolara State Forests located in the Kin Kin/Maryborough/Tin Can Bay/Rainbow Beach area (approximately 2 ½ hours drive north of Brisbane). Unfortunately the brumbies are being hit by cars and trucks posing a threat to motorists along the numerous 100km/hr roads that pass through the forests. In April – May 2009 within a 7-day period four separate incidents occurred resulting in extensive vehicle damage and death of horses.
Forestry Plantation Queensland (FPQ) is making a concerted effort to address the problem humanely by proposing a modest trial program to trap and remove herds from high risk areas (ie along the Maryborough Cooloola Road) to reduce the risk of horse – vehicle collisions. The brumbies will be transported to a property in Cootharaba for rehoming by SEQ Brumby Association Inc. Read More
Untrained Brumbies
SEQ Brumby Association are only able to accommodate a limited number of brumbies due to the small size of the property where the brumbies are cared for and trained by SEQBA. Nevertheless brumbies are constantly being removed from the Toolara State Forest by the trapper as Forestry Plantation Qld intend to remove approximately 150 brumbies from the Toolara State Forest over the the next couple of years. These brumbies currently live within 4km of the main road (Tin Can Bay Gympie Road) and thus are at a very real risk of a vehicle/horse collision. Recently the trapper witnessed one herd of brumbies cross the main road 3 times in one day as part of their normal daily routine.
As the brumbies are trapped from the forest they will need a home to go to and thus in addition to the brumbies which we halter train and show for sale on this web page, we are looking for people who may be able to provide a home for a brumby which has not previously been handled. Such brumbies can be provided to you at very little cost however they require homes with appropriate facilities and with people in attendance that have the necessary experience in horse handling.
It is a policy of SEQBA that:
- the new owner take full responsibility in providing the brumby with ongoing care and a safe and happy environment in which to learn the necessary lessons to enable him/her to become a self confident companion;
- the brumby never be disposed of through a dispersal sale/auction;
- the new owner provide and pay for veterinary care to alleviate suffering of the brumby at all times;
- the new owner retain ownership of the brumby for a minimum period of 12 months and send regular updates to SEQBA about the progress of the brumby during the first 12 months.
Please email us at seqbrumby@hotmail.com if you feel you are able to provide a home for an untrained brumby.
